Cold Open: Mid-Bridge
You are halfway across.
Not the dramatic halfway.
The quiet halfway.
Ice under your boots.
Wind that finds every gap in your coat.
A rail that exists, but does not comfort.
Your hands know the metal by memory now.
You stop.
Not because you doubt the decision.
Because your body is doing the math.
One misstep equals pain.
One shortcut equals regret.
One moment of ego equals a long fall.
And there is no audience.
No one is filming this part.
No one is clapping.
No one is even arguing anymore.
That last one is the weirdest.
Because opposition at least proves the work matters.
Silence feels like being left on read by the universe.
You look ahead.
The far side is still distant.
Real, but distant.
You look back.
Too far to pretend the first steps were easy.
Too far to go back without paying twice.
So you do what leaders do in the middle.
You keep your balance.
